My cat died two years ago, but it happened so suddenly we never found out why, so it's been sorta a mystery. I'm hoping maybe someone else has heard of some of these symptoms or something, and put my mind at ease as to why Boo died.
2 years ago we got home from picking up my kids from school and when we got home, Boo, my 9 year old cat, was just lying on the kitchen floor. My husband thought he was dead because he was so still. He wasn't. He was however breathing very rapidly, and just didn't seem "right" he told the kids that Boo most likely won't live very much longer. We just moved to a new city, hubby started a new job, and we had no money to take Boo to the vet. :( Every so often Boo would act like he was back to his old self, then go back to his rapid breathing again. I know there was a time I tried to pick him up and he meowed really loud like he was in a lot of pain in his belly area. He was also leaking too.
Before he died, he stood on the floor in front of our bed for a good minute (a few hours after we got home) and just stared (we have a window right next to the bed, and he used to love to get up on the bed to get into the window) when he finally jumped up, he got into the window and within a minute started to scream a terrible scream! I've never heard anything so terrible before, then he fell over onto the bed, he had a few convultions then he passed on. I don't think I cried so hard.

Jen,
It's hard to say what Boo was afflicted with. It could be cancer, liver or kidney failure. It could be diabetis, but that's not likely if Boo was not overweight. An autopsy might have helped.
It's possible that like many cats, Boo was positive for leukemia, feline aids, FIP, etc., but it was dormant for years. The stress of moving may have prompted the positive condition to become the full-blown disease.
This story touches me because it is so much like the loss of a friend of mine at an MSN Group. She also suddenly lost a cat named Boo two years ago on Sept 15, 2001. She also barely lives inside Canada, but in Alberta. This Boo was white, but seemed to be Siamese.
I'm at a loss to say what caused Boo's demise, but am sorry that you went through this.

Boo was HUGE 25+ pounds
Wow that's really freaky! My Boo died on September 19, 2001 and I too also live in Canada.
Thank you for your kind words though!!

Correction: the Boo in Alberta died August 15, 2001, but that's still pretty close.

It was about two years old and was either mauled by a dog or an animal abuse victim. :( This just made it all the more tragic. Her board handle is Boo.

Could Boo have had a urinary blockage? You said he had pain in the stomach area and leaking. Was he leaking urine?

Do you think so??? He almost died of this back in '94 but there were signs that made us know something was defintely wrong, like he was bleeding from his rear end area, he strained really hard the times he would go to the litterbox (I think he went MAYBE 2-3 times that whole day) and only a drip would come out. When we rushed him to the vet back then, the vet told us that he would've have made it through the night, if we would've brought him in.

Sounds like a urinary blockage to me, but I'm no vet or expert. We have a cat that had that problem and he was in much pain. If we hadn't rushed him to the vet when we did, he would've died. There's also a problem called megacolon (our same cat had this). Here's some info on that. I'm sorry you lost your cat and wish you could've taken him to the vet.

Thriftymom,
The other Boo was ten months when the vet attempted to spay her. She had a heart attack and died. She looked like a flame-point Siamese (white fur).

so sry to hear about your kitty. as we speak my cat is at the vets with what they say a bladder infection. had a catheter put in bloody urine lots of straining. thye said it was caused by his tail gettting hurt but i really dont think so because when we went to see him his tail was fine. as in moving around and not limp.well the vet took his catheter out this past friday and they had to put it back in because he wouldnt or couldnt go to the bathroom on his own. ok they said his urine was clear but when we went to see him on saturday i asked if his urine was bloody again and the girl (not a vet) said i think its from the catheter. so i dont know whats going on. i am really thinking of getting a second opinion. i would relly hate it if he had to put down if there was another way i could help him.
