I've been wondering...why do a lot of dogs sleep at either the foot of the bed on the floor... or ...up on the bed with their humans but at the foot end of the bed? Are they "protecting us" from danger or something like that?
When we first go to bed, Elvis Lee cuddles up above our heads on our pillows, chews my hair a little, then curls up at our sides or inbetween the two pillows for a little while, then he goes and sleeps at our feet on the bed for the rest of the night (on top of the covers).
and During the day, he frequently curls up at my feet for naps but I figure he just wants to be near his mommy.
good night all,

Wolf packs tend to sleep close together all cuddled up. It is thought be be just a little of the wolf left in our dogs.
lol...Trixie must think that she needs protected because she sleeps at my pillow between me and the wall...sort of like she's hiding.
It makes sense I guess...I mean, she is smaller, so why shouldn't I protect her! lol
Maybe it's just where they're comfortable...or MAYBE they think we're doing it wrong! *You're supposed to sleep at THIS end!*
lol I can just see a lot of dogs thinking something like that. hahahaha!

I think it is just the nearness thing. Lola follows me around all day...no matter which room of the house I go to, she follows. And when I am cleaning and going from room to room..she does too. It seems only to make sense that when we lay down she would lay with us.
Boomer used to like to try and lay with us...but he was just so big..and he pretty much had his own "room" that he always felt most comfortable in. And he was very attached to us as well.....it might just depend on the induvidual dog some too.
I do know that Lola is great at keeping my legs and feet warm. She always sleeps in the crook of my knees and heats up the end of the bed!

Bentley sleeps like a human, his head on the pillow and the rest of his body under the covers. A lot of times, too, he will curl up under the covers by my legs. It is very sweet - but I think his breed is knows for burrowing, and must sleep covered up.

Our pups are silly: Scooter burrows under the covers and either sleeps against the small of my back or the back of my husband's knees when it is cold. A few nights he got soooo hot, he barely woke up and just dragged himself to the top of the bed so that he had his head on one of our pillows and propmtly fell back asleep. I have never seen a dog that is so happy to go to bed... about 10:30 each night he starts trying to get us to follow him to the bedroom. (he is too short to jump on the bed by himself)
On the other hand, Miss Katie likes to start out sleeping at the foot of the bed... but when I wake up in the morning... she is usally laying right next to me with her head on my pillow just like a person. (she can take over almost half of the bed :heh: crazy puppy)
To answer the original question... I do think that Katie is trying to protect us as she is always between us and the door and will get up and check things out in the middle of the night if she hears something. Scooter is just oblivious... oh well, at least one dog will wake us up if someone tries to break in during the night

I don't know why dogs do it, but I know that Sadie & Mojo both do. MoJo sleeps at the foot of the bed on the floor & Sadie at the foot on the bed. The funny thing with Sadie is that she has to make sure she's touching either my boyfriend or myself. MoJo who sleeps on the floor & has always chosen to, will jump on the bed at the pillows whenever either my boyfriend or myself get up. I think it's just a little game he likes to play, cause there's plenty of room for him to sleep with all of us. Which he does whenever it storms. Aren't dogs funny like that? LOL

Yongi doesn't seem to care where on the bed she is as long as she is touching me some how. When my boyfriend is home (deployed right now) she likes to be in the middle so that she is touching both of us, but if not curled up next to me. She is such a cuddler. I love it. And she is watch dog at all times, as soon as she hears, sees, smells anything she up checking it out and letting me know.

Yongi's Mom, I know exactly what you mean. Sadie is the biggest cuddler ever. No matter where I am she's always with me. She's not much of a watch dog, more of a fraidy cat, lol. But that's what MoJo's for, he would protect us against anything. Aren't dogs great!
