It's Their Destiny site...Not for weak stomachs/hearts
This site shows graphic photos, but is trying to stop the inumanity of people in the phillipines and Korea of eating dogs and cats as well. :( They have petitions you can sign and sign up for updates on the issue.
It's Their Destiny Last one I recieved was that this issue is being expressed world wide now... I will post the last update I recieved. If the picture on the right doesn't show up... it is a cartoon of a dog that is being hit over the head. At the bottom they have an email address that allows you to contact the news that this article came from telling them that its not funny to show a dog being hit over the head. "It's Their Destiny" News items on Asian animal abuse 19th September 2004 "Thieves to Pay Big for Eating Pedigree Dog" Dear Friends The story about the theft, brutal killing and consumption of a dog in Korea (originally reported in the Korean "Chosun Ibo" on 16/09/04) has now been reported in newspapers from all over the world. We would not usually have brought this item to your attention, since this kind of activity happens every day in South Korea. We did however wonder how this report could have captured the interest of the world's press. The Chosun Ibo report follows exactly as it appeared in the English language version: Thieves to Pay Big for Eating Pedigree Dog Three men who ate someone else's Jindo dog behind his back have found themselves in a situation where they must pay the owner several tens of millions of won. 62-year-old Mr. Lee, a rental car company executive in Jeonnong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, screamed when he discovered that his Jindo dog "Chanmi," which had been tied up in his company's parking lot, had disappeared Sunday afternoon, leaving only bloodstains behind. The prized, purebred Jindo bitch was left in the parking lot in order to breed, but the dog disappeared without a trace, and bloodstains and a metal pipe were discovered. He then remembered a phone call he received from Mr. Kim, a parking lot attendant, in which Kim extended an invitation to have dog meat. Lee called the police. Learning what Kim had done through the following police investigation, Lee would be shocked once again. Kim and two other employees had beaten the dog to death with a metal pipe, put it in their car and went to a nearby river valley where they boiled up some Korean dog meat soup (boshintang in Korean), which they ate together. They even put the leftover meat in a large refrigerator at an eatery nearby the rental car company for safekeeping. They knew the dog they were eating was a Jindo dog, but they didn't know that this was a proud purebred with a pedigree. Lee, the owner of the dog, complained, "Chanmi was a superior Jindo dog with pure blood that stretched back five generations. On the investigation report, it was written that the dog was worth about W10 million, but the Korea Jindo Dog Association said the dog was worth several tens of millions of won." Korea Jindo Dog Association president Lee Cheol-yong said, "As the dog was two years old and was worth the most not only because of its blood lines, but because it was female and could have lots of puppies, it was worth more than W70~80 million." Seoul's Cheongnyang-ni Police Station applied for an arrest warrant for the three on charges of larceny Monday, but the application was rejected and they were released in a day. Lee, the owner of the dog, said, "Even if it's just to sound the alarm against a social reality that doesn't seem to value purebred Jindo dogs, I will launch a lawsuit and get back what my dog was worth." Of course we at ITD sympathize with anyone that has lost a loved family member. This poor animal was clearly not that. This was not a pet but an investment. A dog in Korea is frequently regarded as dinner. The fact that it was a pedigree dog should be irrelevant The police were of course unable to pursue this matter since dogs are just a commodity. All of which is in BLATANT DISREGARD OF KOREA'S ANIMAL WELFARE ACT (which we all know is regarded as a joke by the Korean Authorities). We have little sympathy for the poor animal's "owner". He is clearly a bastard whose only concern is recouping whatever money he can (and perhaps a little more........). The latest reports indicate that Lee is looking for US$70,000 (UKŁ40,000) in compensation, certainly more than he paid for this abused creature and her living costs were definitely cheap....... But the question remains, why the global interest in (the dog's commercial value aside) an everyday event in Korea? We at ITD would like to think that it may have a little to do with the way in which this item was reported by Chosun Ibo. The international press consists largely of cynical people who have seen all manner of cruelty. Perhaps however even they could not stomach the cartoon image that tried to make this news story humorous. The original report from Chosun Ibo can be seen at (englishnews@chosun.com ) http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200409/200409160027.html Email address: letters@chosun.com Perhaps you could drop them a line to say that killing a dog by hitting it over the head with a lead pipe is not funny..... Our continued thanks to all of you for caring. ACTUALLY, the Koreans do NOT eat pet dogs. It is against their culture to eat animals whose feet have touched the ground. They regard those animals as dirty and unable for consumption.
The restruants get their dogs from special factories where the animals are raised for food purposes only. They are treated well and humanely. Now I'm not saying I would eat dog, but how is this any different than the way other countries raise chickens, pigs, cows, etc. for food? The Koreans don't really value dogs as pets as much as we do here in the States. I won't sign this petition because whoever set it up has gotten their facts wrong. Even if this one incident is true, it is not a daily or regular occurrence and does not reflect the actions of all Koreans. (hmmm, kinda like the abusers, murderers, etc. that we say do not reflect the enitre American people) How did I get my information? My father just returned from a year and a half military tour in South Korea. He lived, ate, etc. as a normal Korean civilian for that time period. Please think before you judge other countries and their lifestyles. |
I think a list could be made of questionalble custom in every part of the world, from cockfighting in the US, to fox hunting in the UK, to bullfighting in Spain.
I will refrain from this particular story, but non-livestock animals present a greater disease risk when killed for food. It's thought to be what started the outbreak of SARS. |

I thought it might be interesting to share this with some people. Did you visit the website at where they show and describe how the dogs are killed in the Phillipines? They are beaten to death with heavy clubs, and the hair is burnt off of them while they are still alive... they are hung from trees as they are beaten. The ones selling them live, break their limbs and tie them behind their back, and shove a can over their muzzle so the dog will not bite. And I'm talking about the PHILLIPINES! NOT KOREA! Secondly, I am not judging the whole population. Just the ones that are treating these dogs the way I have stated they do above. I did not say anything bad about these people at all. The reason I posted the link, was to show how there are certain areas where they are NOT keeping their animals in good condition, and the way they 'slaughter' the animals. I do not side with the ones who beat the dog to death, and burn and hang it while it is still alive. Why can't they slaugter them in a more humane way? They basically torture the dog before it is killed and sold on the market. I do not side with this. I don't see how you took this offensively... and I don't see where you got the part that I was judging someone. I understand that your father has had the experience of living in Korea for nearly 2 years, and that he has seen the way they live, but I didn't say it was only in Korea. Korean's may be a different story of how they raise their animals for consumption, such as the fact you said they are treated humanely aand in good conditions. I have no idea how the Korean area is, but I was posting to the fact of the way the Phillipines treat the dogs before slaughter. They could atleast have a better way to treat and keep the dogs before they sell them. If they consume the dogs, that's their business, but don't beat and burn a defensless animal for its last minutes of its life. I thought some people may have been interested, but I guess not.. Oh and also, this is my opinion... you may have one different, but do not tell me what to do, and how to think. Thanks :) |
The Referree Speaks...
While this topic is definitely unpleasant (and don't want to dwell on it a lot), it deserves mention.
Many websites report that in some Asian countries, pets are served as meals. Jay Leno got in trouble during the 2002 Winter Olympics joking about this. Websites can look very sharp without necessarily presenting the truth or both sides. I'd like to allow this discussion to continue, but please:

If I cannot find material besides the one website to support my opinion, then I well let it go... and take back what I have said. |
Okay, I have found a site that states as Spencer said.. eating dogs spreads disease, one such as rabies, which has killed 362 Fillipinos in 1998. So not only does the fact seem inhumane to consume dogs, but the fact that it endangers the people as well. They also said the country only has a very limited dosage to give to dogs, but is not enough for 7 million dogs. Their gonvernmetn also suspended the manufacturer of the rabies vaccination.
Rabies Cases Increase in the Phillipines I had also gotten an email from the ITD website, and they had given me an update that there was going to be footage of dogs being slaughtered broadcasted on an event they hold there. If I can find the email, I will post it for you... I also found this site, which a veterinarian explains an interview they were held in, and their opinion about them showing dogs being slaughtered on television. I believe the program is called GMA. Ark Ethics Here is a site that gives a bunch of organizations that are wanting to stop the inhumane dog/cat treatment and consumption. And THIS shows how the dogs are kept. Also shows a picture of a dog being hung to deat on a tree, as well as one to the right and at the bottom, where a man hangs a dog over the side of the bridge. And I hate to say this, but some of the sites, as well as this one, that I have visited said that this happens in Korea. That is some research I have done... I plan on doing more later... |
Good post!
One of my internet secrets is knowing how to user search engines. I search:
|
I used strictly Google for now. Typed in Fillipino's eat dogs. and Then the "It's Their Destiny"
There were a bunch of other sites that I didn't get a chance to look at. But I plan to look at them tonight. I guess this thread is kinda like a debate... LOL I never meant to offend anyone.. although I did, and I apologize... |
Oh, and watch the video that is on the last link. It is basically what I was trying to get across, and it is a man who is living IN KOREA. He tells you about what he sees everyday... he also tells you that there is NO WHERE that states in the Korean culture, that torturing a dog with a blow torch, while being hung from a tree, is humane.... that throwing a cat into a pot of boiling water, is humane.
He also said, that if you believe Koreans do not eat dogs, your wrong. They eat ALOT of it. He says he sees truck fulls of dogs, being brought in to markets. And the last one is a good one. There is a lady who has made her home into a shelter for cats and dogs. They are all fixed, so they are unable to reproduce. It explains it throughout the video. I'd like to call it the "happy" video of the site And you're brave enough, look at the picture below the "Photo Gallery" section where you have to click on the link to view the picture. I don't see how that isn't inhumane and should be considered part of their culture. :madfire: |
I feel ya on this one, I understand what you are trying to convey. Another member had posted something very similar. No animal whether here or anywhere else deserves to be treated in such a disrespectful manner. If your killing for food then there is a right way and a wrong way. The animals people consume are mistreated also right here in the USA and there are plenty of wackos that just plain mistreat animals period. Sick is not the word, surely disturbed within their inner selves. When they go to Rainbow Bridge they will be whole and healthy again. That is what matters. The people that are cruel will pay, I firmly believe that. If everyone supported the animals rescues etc then together we can help put a dent in animal cruelity. I say a dent cause I feel that is all that can be done in the world the way it is now.
|
Yes it is quite disturbing. But only because it is not the norm.
Think of what we do to chickens... People have them for pets, and we eat those. And chickens are kept in cages, with so many in them that they can not move. Cages stacked on top of cages, and the feces from the cages on top fall through to the bottom ones. Hatchlings often have their beaks ground down or cut down, so they can't peck each other... Sometimes they are so full of chemicals (to make them grow large) that they grow so large that they can not walk, there poor chickie legs can not support them. There is so much more info on this that I can not even begin to type it here... |
:bawl: I think this is absolutly disgusting. How can someone one eat something that is so loving and beautiful. To Black Tornado, it doesn't matter if the animals are treated humanely or not. It doesn't make it right! This story makes me sick to my stomach and breaks my heart!
|
Kemo... I understand what you mean about only putting a dent in this situation. Don't we all wish that everyone loved animals as much as we do? The world would be a better place.. I know there are people in the US that abuse animals well, but in Korea, they have an event that allow you to see videos. They wanted to submit a video of the dogs being tortured :(
Like you said... there is a right way to do it, and a wrong way to do it. I cried when I saw the site... and I get teary when I look at it everytime... It just puzzles me at how they can just go and light a dog on fire with a blow torch as it dangles from a tree.. :( |
You all make very good points. I am glad to see that (so far any way) you guys can hold a debate of sorts and present your points and not argue.
I must side with Black Tornado and WhiteDragon on this issue though. Especially since WhiteDragon brought up chickens, which I am found of (alive that is.) To me this is the same as when we think it is so disgusting when other cultures eat bugs because we do not. Do any of you recall that video of the KFC chickens? The cruelty they face is much the same as the Korean dogs. I of course do not condone this, nor can I look at those pictures on that site and not want to cry. You must remember the same kinds of things are happening to our livestock, which is commonly overlooked because "they are breed to be eaten." This idea is the same in Korea. Even eating eggs and drinking milk causes torture and death to other animals. Chickens are often kept in small, cramped cages, never allowed to even stand up. There only purpose to lay eggs. Cows are breed and there calves often sold as veal so we can have our precious milk. But it cannot be avoided. Even eating vegetables causes farmers to destroy more land for more crops, which kills more animals. (Not to mention what pesticides can do.) |
I agree with Shadow and the others, this is a cultural difference, and many cultures value dogs as pets and companions, other cultures value cows and chickens.
I dont want to see any animal harmed but unless you are a vegetarian (and that has its own issues) then I would be careful about condemning other cultures for what they do. We kill cows in unspeakable ways..... chickens, ducks, and rabbits are all food sources for those who eat meat. In some countries cows are sacred and run free throughout streets..... yet we have no qualms about killing them and eating them and their calves (lets not forget veal). Of course it bothers me that dogs are being used as food..... however, I also realize that those who live in glass houses....... well ya know..... s |
