Question dachshund skin and allergy problems

I have a standard doxie. She will soon be eight. When she was around four she started having allergy problems. Now that she is older she is much worse. We started her on allergy shots almost a year ago now, but they don't seem to be helping her. She constantly licks her hocks and armpits. Also she has a bad odor, and we have to bathe her every two days. The skin on her belly and armpits is very dark, and she secreats an oily substance from her skin. I was wondering if any other doxie owners had this problem with thier dogs? I would appreciate any feedback.

so sorry to hear about that . May I ask what kind of dog food she eats ? My beagle suddenly developed an allergy to corn meal so now I only feed him " human grade " dog food like wellness and california natural and it's helped alot ! . I would also see another vet to get a second opinion to see if cortizone is right for her and to also see if perhaps she is diabetic or has artheritis ( server itching is a side effect of both ailments ) sometimes with vets trust me you have to be insistant and some are just plain better than others . Good luck and I hope she gets well soon !

I have a miniature dachshund, I believe I'm one of the only posters on this web site who has one. I am of absolutely no help since we have not had allergy problems, but I wanted to reply anyway.

Good luck.

Smile doxie allergies

Thanks for the reply. I am going to see another vet,as the one I have now keeps blaming everything on allergies. As to the type of food she eats, it's Purina One for seniors. She is allergic to rice, but can't find a food without it, does anyone know of any?

Wellness Fish and Sweet Potatoe doesn't have rice or corn in it. Our little guy is an allergy dog so I understand what you're going through.

My late Ursa was a very allergic dog, too. I definitly recommend special food (your vet probably sells it or you can buy it online) without wheat, corn or rice. On my vet's recommendation, I also gave Ursa antihistamines (sp?) twice a day every day of her life. DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT GETTING YOUR VET'S OKAY, HEAR? I'm so emphatic about that because meds, especially human meds, should never be given to animals without a vet's okay. But it did help Ursa, so maybe you should ask.

And honey, if your current vet seems the least bit uninterested or blase' about this problem, go to another one and don't look back. Your vet should be telling you about all the possible causes, and options to try for solutions. Your vet is your partner in ensuring the wellness of your dog. Do not accept the mediocre.
